New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, hesitated to declare this decision right away after his triumph in November.

"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing my complete efforts on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its abundance of cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, the community will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Political Debate

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he came from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the cost of housing outpaces the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
