Authorities stated they were unable to remove the eyes without damaging the artwork.

A young person from Australia has faced legal proceedings after allegedly defacing a sizable art piece of a legendary being by affixing googly eyes to it.

Amelia Vanderhorst, aged 19, appeared via phone at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in the state of South Australia on that day, facing with one count of property damage.

In a statement at the time of the September incident, the local council said that surveillance video captured a individual placing fake eyes on the sculpture, which locals have dubbed the “Blue Blob”.

Ms Vanderhorst did not enter a plea and told the judge she was unwell, as reported by news outlets, with the judge recommending her to find a legal representative before her upcoming hearing in December.

A day after the reported event, the city leader stated that restoration to the popular community sculpture would be costly as the adhesive eyes were impossible to be detached without harming the sculpture.

“This intentional vandalism to a cherished community art is inappropriate and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those people of our community who have embraced the Blue Blob.”

She said the council would seek the “significant” restoration expenses from those accountable for the damage.

When the sculpture was initially suggested, it drew varied responses from the local community due to its cost and appearance.

Priced at 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the artwork represents a mythical megafauna, with the creators influenced by an ancient marsupial ant-eater found in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
