No fewer than 16 individuals perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

ā€œHow is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?ā€ a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. ā€œHe moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,ā€ she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

ā€œThis low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,ā€ the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an ā€œabsolute bloodbath,ā€ but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a ā€œstroke of luckā€ he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to ā€œa large numberā€ of shots.

ā€œI thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,ā€ he explained. ā€œI was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.ā€
