It might not have been at the same level as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a first responder, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so widespread that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the holiday season,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the character of Miami: happy, varied, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
