The Showrunner Reveals He Knows How Pluribus Will End... For Now.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the popular program coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

On the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. He is striving to ignore the noise.

“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Despite his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

A Pressing Query: Does the creator Know the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.

“We have some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
