Citizens have come together across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a risk to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership delayed state remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place throughout the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the conditions of the plan.

A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an evening round of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.

The official said the morning session concluded without tangible results, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.

Critical Matters in Negotiations

  • A lasting truce
  • The swap of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance deliveries
  • Post-war management of the area

Civilian Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young a woman - whose brother survived the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas fighters - explained: "No location seems like home now and until every captive are released none of us will have peace of mind."

"When we see everyone home again, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to recover," she added.

In front of the prime minister's home in the capital, people assembled to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Activist a participant stated: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of Israelis prefer the hostilities to end in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the location of Nova festival, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.

From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli shelling continued.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side area of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.

"As the evening arrives, the anxiety appears with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my little child who puts his face on me all night."

"Constantly we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."

Health Crisis

The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated additional dead people had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the south, medics stated.
