New York Unveils Portal for Residents to Share ICE Footage After Arrests of Four American Citizens

The state attorney general has rolled out a new digital platform urging residents to share visual evidence of immigration raids around New York. This move comes just a shortly after a significant enforcement action shook NYC's Chinatown, triggering widespread outcry.

American Citizens Held During Raid

A lawmaker disclosed during a Wednesday press conference that four American citizens were taken into custody and kept for "about 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Rallies occurred in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"Every New Yorker is entitled to exist without intimidation," the attorney general declared in a release.

"For those who saw and recorded federal operations during the raid, I urge you to provide that footage with my office. We are dedicated to examining these accounts and determining any violations of law."

Form Details

The portal offers spaces to upload visual evidence of the operation, plus a area to specify location information. Prior to sending, individuals must check a checkbox that states that "the office might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, including in a court case or government document."

Details of the Chinatown Raid

The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say included dozens of federal agents, took place in a famous area of the city where fake purses, items, goods and merchandise are sold daily widely – often to visitors.

Footage of Tuesday's raid show numerous masked and armed officers securing and holding a person, and shoving away bystanders. Crowds of residents pursued the agents along the roads. An military-style transport was noticed rolling through the Manhattan avenues.

Official Reactions

At a news conference held with the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a lawmaker, said that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where four American citizens should be arrested for unjustly." He noted the individuals were freed on Wednesday with no charges filed.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman remarked. "This is a military-style operation to create conflict. It is simply a pretext to incite violence for the government to deploy the armed forces to halt conflict that they themselves caused."

Broad Criticism

Anger over the ICE raid quickly spread – all three political contenders denounced the operation, along with the state leader.

"Repeatedly, the federal government chooses heavy-handed tactics that create fear, rather than security. It has to end," a contender declared.

The city's advocacy organizations voiced concern also.

"ICE raided Manhattan's Chinatown with armored transports, covered personnel and protective equipment to target local sellers working to survive. This raid had no relation to citizen protection and focused completely on frightening communities and areas," remarked the president of a rights organization.

ICE Policies

Agency rules bans the detention of US citizens and the bureau has said it will not arrest or detain citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has found that numerous American nationals have been taken illegally by ICE since the start of the current administration.

Recent Pattern

ICE raids have been rising in frequency in the state and across the US this year.

A recent action in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Protests targeting immigration enforcement are ubiquitous along with claims of violence and cruel conditions.

Most recently, a letter provided by civil rights groups claimed inadequate care of expectant mothers in government custody.
