Larian Studios Clarifies Its Use of Machine Learning for Next Divinity

The team behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently teased its upcoming project, generating immense anticipation within the industry. However, subsequent remarks from the studio's figurehead have introduced a new dimension to the conversation, touching on the team's stance toward generative artificial intelligence.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a latest statement, Swen Vincke explained that the team is employing generative AI for certain ancillary purposes. These encompass developing presentation materials, generating early-stage visual ideas, and drafting temporary text.

Notably, Vincke stressed that the end material in the game will be created entirely by actual writers. "Our team is writing all the content manually," he stated.

Our studio is continuously growing our pool of storytellers and are actively assembling narrative groups.

Given that this area is being explicitly referenced — we currently have over twenty visual developers and have job openings for further artists.

Each initiative we do is additive and designed to having people spend additional energy on actual creation.

Every AI system used well is a boost to a artist's process, not a substitute for their talent.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The revelation of using AI originally sparked concern among a segment of the player base. In response, Vincke offered additional elaboration on social media.

"Our team utilizes machine learning to research ideas, in the same way we use the internet and art books," he wrote. "In the very early brainstorming phase we use it as a simple sketch for structure which we then swap out with original illustrations."

He noted, "We've hired talent for their creative vision, not for their willingness to replicate what a machine suggests."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had in the past detailed the studio's targeted approach to AI and ML, defining its use into key areas:

  • Streamlining Repetitive Work: This encompasses polishing mocap data, voice editing, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to speedily create rough mock-ups of scenarios to test concepts prior to full implementation.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Exploring how AI could eventually create new forms of reactivity, especially in creating unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.

He specifically stated that key artistic domains — such as writing — are are absolutely not areas where the company is reducing creative involvement. On the contrary, Larian is recruiting more in these very roles.

"Larian is not releasing a game with AI-generated content, nor considering trimming down teams to substitute them with AI," Vincke stated definitively.
