Lando Norris Secures Debut F1 Drivers' Crown in Abu Dhabi Despite Max Verstappen's Grand Prix Victory.

Through an exhibition of nerveless driving, Lando Norris has clinched his maiden Formula One world championship by taking P3 at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. That finish was all that was required for the British driver, even though his rival Max Verstappen won the race and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri came home in second.

The driver performed exactly what was needed in an extremely intense battle at the Yas Marina Circuit, including a series of audacious passing maneuvers, with flawless execution from both the driver and his team.

A Momentous Achievement for British Motorsport and McLaren

With this his maiden world championship, Norris becomes the eleventh driver from Britain to achieve this. This ends the team's drivers’ championship wait, which stretched back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the championship double back in 1998.

It represents a remarkable resurgence for the team, from a low point in the mid-2010s when they ended up ninth in the standings. This resurgence has been spearheaded by team principal Zak Brown and, more recently, by Andrea Stella, who has built an well-drilled team with a very fast car.

A Tale of Two Teammates

Regarding his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had looked so strong for much of the season, there was obvious disappointment at stumbling in the final third. Several of difficult weekends and mistakes, such as crashing out in Baku, proved costly. Nevertheless, he emerges having demonstrated he is too world champion material. Being so fast in only his third season in F1, with seven wins, remains a huge achievement.

Verstappen too had been exceptional to take the title battle down to the last race. He did everything possible in Abu Dhabi with the win, but having come back from a significant deficit in August, he fell just short of having enough to catch Norris, ending up just a handful of points short.

Closing it Out with Ruthless Precision

Norris closed out his success with ruthless precision to take the crown that had been within reach but remained just out of grasp as McLaren struggled at the last two rounds. First a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an questionable strategy call in Qatar.

This represents a significant achievement for the driver in his seventh year in F1, all of them with McLaren. He stuck with the team even during tough times, convinced they would come good. That belief was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.

He has done a remarkable job to persist with his task, keeping his cool and belief during periods under the cosh. Having lost the lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he still worked at maximising what he could.

The Decisive Race

In the race, Verstappen kept his first place through turn one, but the three title leaders avoided contact. Piastri, using the more durable compound, was feisty and made a spectacular move to pass the outside of Norris to claim second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were allowed to fight, but put Norris under pressure from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Early pit stops saw Norris come out into midfield traffic, but he overtook rivals within a lap and showed no signs of nerves in his race craft.

On lap 19, he made an absolutely bravura move to overtake two cars in one swoop, moving up to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. The rival team instructed their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a dramatic overtaking attempt where Norris burst up the inside line, nearly completely off the track.

The incident was investigated by the race officials, with several impossibly tense laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris settled the matter. This bold move without being held up was vital to his title fight.

Contrasting Fortunes

While Norris was crowned the first Briton to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in form between the two was pronounced. While the new generation battled over the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal ending to a difficult season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Scuderia had been met by excitement but has yielded what was easily his worst season ever, finishing sixth in the championship without a top-three finish. He has looked jaded in the final rounds and will look to rebuild over the off-season.
