A group of six quirky but doughty children fall into the path of a vast and terrible paranormal malevolence that has infiltrated our existence from the farthest reaches of darkness. They must wage a lifelong battle fighting it, enduring terror upon terror in the process.

A Familiar Premise with a New Twist

This is the plot, broadly speaking, of the master of horror’s iconic book It (arguably his finest; no debate). It similarly frames of King’s son Joe Hill’s latest chilling tome, in which a band of six call forth the age-old, deeply sinister beast the Dragon King from the Long Dark to help them defeat some villains. Needless to say, their supernatural ritual goes awry.

Celebrating a Authorial Lineage

Joe Hill began his writing journey striving diligently to distance himself from his well-known dad, publishing under the pen name he still uses today and steering clear of encounters with his agent (he bears a uncanny likeness to his parent). However, in his newest work, he fully acknowledges it. Certain passages that intentionally mirror some of his father’s iconic (“The man in black fled across the desert …”); a scene that recalls a signature King element (a riddling contest). In this whopper of a novel, Joe Hill takes pleasure in his family connection, and readers share in the joy.

The Cast of the Protagonists

Focusing on the companions: five of them are pupils at the made-up Rackham College in the New England state. There’s Arthur, bookish and gifted, cracking ancient puzzles in his free moments; another key figure, affluent, sharp, and known for crushing obstacles in his path; Donna and Donovan; the stunning the lovely Allie. And there’s Gwen, who isn’t their classmate, but assumes a vital role of their group as they dabble, half believing, somewhat doubtful, in the occult.

The Fateful Ritual

Our hero becomes, for reasons we don’t need to go into, obliged to take rare books from his cherished academic collection by a group of neighborhood thugs. This tears at his bookish heart, especially when he’s compelled to seize the collection’s foremost and unsettling publication: the journal of adept the historical figure (executed “for trafficking with the devyll in 1703”; the book’s jacket is made from his skin). These young investigators read the journal, discover they could summon what the author references as a armoured devil” to assist Arthur with his coercion issue – and spend the rest of the novel facing the fallout. The dragon will undoubtedly remove those problematic neighborhood criminals, but they must select a fresh offering each year or succumb to the dragon’s wrath. As Arthur later puts it: “You sow dragon’s teeth, all you get is further monstrosities.”

Genre Dexterity and Creative Range

Covering a generation, Hill also moves with effortless ease across narrative styles: as the companions strive to manage the situation they find themselves in by, variously, selecting clearly malevolent individuals to sacrifice, or hunting down ways to kill the dragon themselves, we go from suspense to grim fantasy, black-ops torture to affectionate subplot to fright. One particularly memorable shift was to a heroic journey, far beneath the surface under the English county, a part infused with JRR Tolkien that was wonderfully frightening.

A Detailed Canvas of Dread and Courage

We encounter trolls – bridge-dwelling ones and digital trolls, genuinely frightening and expertly realized. The story includes mystic weapons and treacheries, heart-stopping scenes of valor and instances of dreadful evil, both earthly and supernatural. It stands as a masterpiece: a horror novel that is primarily a ode to the human inventiveness, and to love and friendship. “We required a narrative to trust and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says Colin as the allies assemble around a surface, making preparations to call forth their beast into being with the force of their minds.
