Individuals from both sides of the political aisle and the entertainment world are coming together to censure former President Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the tragic passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on social media to describe the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the anger he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the case. It is reported his bail was established at a substantial amount.
The response to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
“What a vile and despicable comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the statements. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a disturbed man."
Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Some Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared members in his party to justify the statements.
Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally after the shooting of a different political figure.
Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
