Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams declared his decision to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned the former governor, describing him as a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a new statement, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, stating he now intends to appear with Cuomo in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.

“I think that it is imperative to energize the communities of color that have experienced gentrification on how important this election is,” Adams remarked.

Adams continued, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been dominated by the competition between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has made headlines worldwide and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.

During a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa announced they would decline the mayor's support if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later thrown out in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams answered reporters asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”

This development came a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a heated mayoral debate.
