The co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner Unilever stopped the launch for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, that established the business with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor as part of a personal collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders and Parent Company

The recent announcement escalates the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.

Both founders have claimed that the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity

Mr. Cohen announced via social media how he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Social Engagement and Current Developments

Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.

This upcoming dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first created several years back to support former political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts plus Future Plans

The founder revealed how he will create additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which the company was silenced from speaking about openly by Unilever.

The announcement comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades of involvement, citing worries that its independence was compromised after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.

At that time, Ben Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
