Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
