A Story of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground

During 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. My plan was to book a place to stay when I arrived, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and all the budget hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I considered perhaps I could bed down in the terminal – but quickly found that airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open around the clock. Unsure of what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on public transport and started wandering in the direction of a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass the evening in a place that stayed open all night. This was not ideal in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the following day, however, being a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

The world needs more people like that woman.

I must have looked out of place as a female student noticed me wandering around downtown and wondered whether I needed help. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she said I could sleep on the ground in her student dorm at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where my interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided a meal: one of the stuffed baguettes she had taken home her evening job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a secure location and secure to spend the night.

In retrospect, it’s clear to me the significant risk she took as a young woman letting a man she had only just encountered crash at her place. In those days I operated under a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking about things like that. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.

I didn’t end up study at ANU, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of generosity. I hope karma has rewarded her good deed abundantly. We could all use more people who show such kindness.
